There are many things to love about cats. Man’s Second Best Friend is cute, cuddly, lovable, and lots of fun. Fluffy is also very clean, and will discretely do her business in a litterbox. This makes caring for kitties much easier, as you’ll never rush home to walk your pet. Here, a Lakewood Ranch, FL vet discusses—you guessed it—the litterbox.
Location
Choosing the right spot is very important. Ideally, your furball’s box should be in a quiet area that is easy for her to access. Just like people, kitties prefer to have some privacy in the bathroom! Don’t put Fluffy’s powder room in direct sunlight, in loud/open areas, or in spots that are hard for her to reach.
Products
Generally, you can use any type of litter you like. However, if you have a kitten, avoid clay and clumping litters until your furball is bigger. Baby cats are rather clumsy, and can accidentally ingest litter. This can cause dangerous intestinal blockages! You’ll also need to give your feline pal a say in the matter. Some kitties are very particular about litter. If Fluffy seems to like or dislike specific brands, abide by her ‘purrferences.’
Scent
The best way to combat odors is simply to keep the box clean. We recommend scooping daily and changing the litter every week. You can also experiment with air fresheners, liners, powders, and/or self-cleaning litterboxes. Ask your vet for more information.
Concealment
Fluffy’s personal powder room definitely won’t do much for your décor. If you have a house, you may be able to put it in a utility room, a spare closet, or even an attached garage. You can install a kitty door if you like. However, people who live in apartments may have a harder time finding an out-of-the way spot. There are some clever ways to hide Fluffy’s litterbox. One option is to upcycle an end table, chest, or storage tote. Cut a door for your cat in one side, and use the doors or cover to access it for cleaning. Or, get an attractive folding screen, and put the litterbox behind it. You can also get a piece of furniture that was custom-made to conceal litterboxes. These may cost a bit more, but they’re attractive and functional.
