Do you have a screened porch or patio? What about a sunroom, spare room, or even a bright corner? Why not make your feline pal a catio? Kitties are always safer staying indoors, where they are safe from weather, chemicals, gators, stray dogs, parasites, traffic, and other hazards. However, Fluffy will enjoy being able to experience a taste of nature. A Sarasota, FL vet offers tips on creating a catio below.
Plants
Kitties love peeking out from behind green leaves, and pretending they’re fierce lions. They also sometimes like to nibble on plants. Therefore, it’s important to make sure you only get pet-safe plants. You can find a full list at the ASPCA website
here
. Some good options are Spider plants, Boston ferns, Rubber tree plants, Ponytail palms, and Areca palms. You can also add herbs, like parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. (Bonus: you’ll get fresh ingredients for cooking.) For extra purrs, grow some catnip or cat grass for your furry buddy.
Kitty Furniture
Kitties don’t mind ‘borrowing’ our furniture, but they do appreciate having some things of their own. Cat towers are a great addition to any catio! Your feline overlord will not only gain a napping spot and a kitty nail-care station, she’ll also have a high vantage spot from which she can supervise her kingdom. Your pet would also enjoy comfy beds, pet tents, cat tunnels, and/or boxes. Catwalks and window seats are also great for catios. If possible, put a birdfeeder up in your cute pet’s line of sight. Kitties can spend hours just watching birds! Of course, you’ll also want to add a comfy patio set for yourself. You may find that Fluffy’s room becomes a favorite spot for reading, drinking coffee, or just relaxing!
Kitty Luxuries
Don’t forget to put some fun toys out for your feline friend! The kind of playthings you choose should depend on what type of space you have. If it’s screened-in, Fluffy’s things may get dusty, so you’ll want to opt for hanging toys or things made out of plastic. Your furry little pal may also enjoy a pet fountain. Many kitties actually prefer to drink running water! Just be sure to change the water and clean the dispenser daily.
