Senior Dog Care Tips

March 15, 2020
Is your dog entering his golden years? Florida is a popular state for people to retire to, and it’s also a great spot for aging dogs! Read on as a Sarasota, FL vet offers some great senior dog care tips.

Proper Activity

Fido will be more interested in catching Z’s than in catching squirrels, but don’t let him become a complete couch potato. Most dogs need at least a daily walk. Swimming can also be great activity for senior dogs, assuming your pooch enjoys it. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Good Diet

Proper nutrition will go a long way towards keeping Fido happy and healthy. Offer him a good, senior formula food. Fatty acids are very important at this stage, as they can be quite beneficial for joint health. Your vet may also recommend supplements, such as glucosamine or fish oil.

Comfy Bed

One of the best ways to pamper Fido is to make sure that he has a comfy bed. Orthopedic beds are great, as they offer extra support.

Grooming

Brushing Fido regularly will help keep his fur free of dust, dirt, pollen, and dead fur. Some dogs will be more comfortable with a haircut in summer. Nail trims and dental care are also important. Book a salon appointment for your canine buddy!

Elevated Dishes

Dogs have to splay their legs to eat from bowls on the floor. As Fido ages, this will become increasingly uncomfortable. Consider getting him elevated dishes.

Veterinary Care

Senior dogs definitely benefit from more frequent visits. It’s important to monitor your pet’s overall health, and stay on top of any changes that could indicate medical issues. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule.

Playtime

Although Fido will slow down as he ages, he’ll still have moments of friskiness. Play with your pup every day. If your canine pal tires out quickly, switch to games that offer more mental stimulation. You can hide treats from your pooch and have him ‘hunt’ them, or play Hide and Seek with him.

Tail Wags

Last but not least, pay lots of attention to your furry BFF, and spend plenty of quality time with him. Fido may want nothing more than to doze off at your feet or enjoy a slow sunset stroll with you.
