Packing Fido's Beach Bag

Florida definitely has some beautiful beaches. Siesta Key, Anna Maria, and Fort DeSoto are just a few of the paradises within our reach. Many of our canine buddies also enjoy our white sand beaches. Why not pack a beach bag for your pup? Here, a Sarasota, FL vet lists some things to include .

Towels

Put a few towels in the bag for Fido. You may not need to dry your canine pal off, but he’ll appreciate having something soft to lie on. You can also put his water dish on one.

Sunscreen

Did you know that dogs can get sunburns? Pups with pale or thin fur are at the highest risk. Ask your vet for more information.  

Umbrella

We recommend heading to the beach in the mornings and evenings, when it’s cooler out. However, If you are going to the beach on a hot, sunny day, bring an umbrella along for Fido. Any beach umbrella will work, but if you want to go all-out, you can get one made just for dogs. Some of these come with cot-style doggy beds. 

Dishes

You should always bring bottled water along for Fido when you take him off your property. You may want to keep some collapsible plastic dishes in your furry friend’s bag. These are very lightweight and easy to carry. Just be sure not to accidentally leave them behind! 

Lifejacket

Dogs are over their heads in just a few feet of water. Fido can easily get swept out to shore. It’s a good idea to keep a lifejacket in your pup’s bag. This is also great to have on hand in case you end up going boating.

First-Aid Kit

Fido does have a knack for getting into mischief. We recommend putting a pet first-aid kit in the bag. Add some pet-first aid brochures as well.  

Tie Line

Depending on where you go, you may want to put Fido on a tie line. You’ll also need to get some beach tent stakes. Look for ones that are stable and sturdy.   

Paw Balm

Fido’s paws are very delicate. Your pooch can burn his feet on hot sand or tar, or cut himself on sharp rocks or shells. Paw balm or wax is a definite must!
