9 Simple Ways to Make Your Cat Happy

September 1, 2020

September is Happy Cat Month! Of course, we think kitties should feel happy all the time. However, this is a purrfect time to shed some light on what really gets Fluffy’s little motor going. Here, a Lakewood Ranch, FL vet offers some advice on keeping your feline buddy content.

Basics

First things first! Make sure Fluffy always has good food, clean litter, and, in summer, access to rooms cooled by fans or AC.

Beds

Did you know that cats can sleep up to 20 hours a day? Fluffy certainly is tired! Make sure your drowsy pet has lots of comfy beds!

Toys

Even the drowsiest furball can’t spend all of her time sleeping. Offer Fluffy lots of toys to play with when she’s awake. Cats all have their own taste, so experiment a bit, and see what yours likes best.

Catnip

Fluffy is super cute when she’s enjoying some catnip. Give your feline friend some of her favorite plant regularly. You can even grow your own!

Entertainment

Another way to make your home more fun and stimulating for your kitty is to add some entertainment options. Comfy window seats are a good bet. If you leave your furry buddy home alone, turn a TV or radio on for her, so she has background noise.

Playtime

Toys are great, but it’s also important to play with your cat. This is good for her both mentally and physically. Plus, it’s cute to watch!

Comfort

Small touches can turn your home into a kitty luxury mansion. Set out empty boxes and paper bags for Fluffy to explore, and offer her lots of comfy perches. If you have a screened-in porch or patio, make it into a catio by adding pet-safe plants and furniture. Check the ASPCA site here for suggestions.

Veterinary Care

We know, many of our patients would scratch this one off the list if they could. However, Fluffy will be much healthier (and therefore happier) with proper veterinary care.

Love!

Cats are very interactive and affectionate, but that bond needs to be nurtured. Pay lots of attention to Fluffy. Talk to her, pet her, and let her snooze on your lap sometimes. Kitty purrs and cuddles are both precious in our book!
