October is Adopt A Shelter Dog Month! If you’re ready to get a new dog, please consider rescuing one from a shelter. In this article, a Lakewood Ranch, FL vet offers some advice on adopting shelter pups.
Be Prepared To Commit
When you adopt a dog, you’re making a promise to care for that pup for the rest of his life. This isn’t something to take lightly! It’s absolutely heartbreaking when dogs get adopted, only to be returned soon after. This is also very hard on our canine pals, as they quickly get attached to their humans. Make sure you’re ready for that sort of commitment.
Don’t Overlook Less Adoptable Pets
It isn’t always easy to pick just one pooch out of a lineup of adorable faces. Keep an open heart, and consider some of the pups that have had a hard time getting adopted. That lovable senior Boxer may be a great cuddle buddy, while that fluffy dog with one eye may turn out to be the best pet ever.
Find The Right Fit
Because adoption is such a huge commitment, it’s very important to make sure that you’re picking the right pooch. Spend some time with Fido, and get to know him. You’ll want to consider his breed, size, age, and temperament. That playful, super active pup may be a perfect fit for a jogger, but may be too much for someone else.
Be Prepared
Before bringing Fido home, make sure that you have everything he needs, such as food, treats, toys, dishes, and bedding. We also recommend doing some petprooofing. If you have a yard, make sure your fence is secure. You’ll also want to remove anything that could be dangerous, such as toxic plants, wires and cords, and anything you don’t want your canine buddy eating or chewing on.
Don’t Expect Perfection
Shelter dogs can be extremely loving and loyal. However, Fido may have some rough edges. He may be frightened of certain things, or may just need time to learn to trust. Be patient, and focus on giving great care. Love can take time!
Take Pictures!
It’s really wonderful to see how excited dogs get when they realize they’ve been adopted. Don’t forget to take lots of pictures of the big day!
