Homemade Gifts for Cats

December 1, 2020

Do you enjoy crafts? If so, you may enjoy making gifts for your loved ones. Homemade gifts are always very special, just because of the work and sentimental value they represent. Fluffy may not care about either of those things, but she will still enjoy some homemade presents. A Lakewood Ranch, FL vet suggests some good ones below.

Catnip Mice

You can find patterns for these online. You can also just trace the outline of a mouse and cut two pieces of material to fit. A slightly easier option is to just make a tiny pillow. Put the pieces together, with the outsides facing in. Sew around the edges, leaving one small hole open. Turn it inside out, so the fabric is facing the correct way. Then, fill with catnip and close it up. Done!

Cat Grass ‘Lawn’

This one will take a few weeks, so get started early! Plant some cat grass seeds in an old litterbox or shallow storage tote. When they’ve grown in, Fluffy will have her own patch of ‘yard’ to look smug on.

Kitty Tower

If you’re a handy type, you can make Fluffy a cat tower from scratch out of lumber or PVC pipes. You can also repurpose an old stepladder or bookshelf. Add planks to the steps or shelves to widen them out. Make sure they are secure! Then, use carpet scraps or sisal rope as a covering. Voila! Instant purr.

Pet Tent

Kitties often feel safe and secure in small areas. You can make Fluffy a little tent out of a T-shirt and hangars. Or, decorate a plain cardboard box. Use wrapping paper or contact paper to make the outside look nice, and then put soft blankets or pillows inside.

Window Seat

Cats love looking outdoors, and watching what’s going on in their domains. Make Fluffy a window seat by adding a wide plank to your sill. You can even attach a pet bed using Velcro.

Box Castle

You can find blueprints and directions online, but you can also just wing it. This can be as simple or elaborate as you like. For a simple one, you can attach just one or two boxes together, and cut a hole between them. Or, go all-out, and incorporate windows, towers, and parapets for your feline overlord.
