Easter Hazards for Pets

Easter is just a few days away! While we may not be celebrating the end of winter as our neighbors up north are, it’s always nice to honor the spring holiday. Of course, just like with any other holiday, Easter does present some hazards for pet owners to be aware of. You’ll need to take care to keep your furry friend safe. C  hocolate

Easter bunnies are a big part of many holiday celebrations. However, keep these away from your pet. Chocolate is extremely toxic to dogs and cats. Many Easter candies also contain a lot of sugar and fat, which really aren’t good for your four-legged friend. Some also have nuts, raisins, and/or xylitol, which are all toxic to pets. If that weren’t enough, hard candies and candy wrappers can also present choking hazards.

Decorations

Keep your furry pal in mind if you are hanging up holiday decorations. Anything with ropes or strings can choke or entangle playful pets. Plastic decorations are also unsafe. These can be serious choking/strangling hazards, and they can cause serious intestinal blockages if ingested. This includes things like wreaths, garlands, plastic eggs, and the fake grass you find in many Easter baskets.

Bouquets

Pretty bouquets are an Easter staple. Just put those flowers where Fluffy and Fido can’t reach them. Many popular flowers, such as lilies, tulips, and oleanders, are toxic to pets. Check the ASPA site here for more information. 

Heat

While the worst of summer’s heat may be a ways off, this time of year can still bring some scorchers. Make sure your pet is ready for the hot weather! Brushing your fuzzy buddy regularly will help keep them cool. Fluffy and Fido will also need plenty of fresh, cool water, and access to shady, cool rooms or areas at all times.

Food

Are you hosting an Easter meal? Be careful what you share with your pet. Ham, which is often the main course for Easter, isn’t really great for our four-legged buddies. Other unsafe foods include garlic and onions; scallions; chives; meat on the bone; raw dough; grapes, currants, and raisins; avocado; and anything containing xylitol.
