Hug Your Cat Day

June 1, 2021

Did you know that June 4th is Hug Your Cat Day? That’s a pretty cute holiday, one that many of our feline patients would happily indulge in. However, not all cats like being hugged. In fact, some of them are rather aloof! If your pet seems to prefer that you admire her from a distance, read on. Here, a Lakewood Ranch, FL vet offers some advice on celebrating Hug Your Cat Day with kitties that don’t enjoy hugs.

Toys

Our feline pals are hunters by nature. Pick up Fluffy some new playthings to pounce on and push under the couch. You can opt for something classic, like a catnip mouse or wand toy. Or offer the furball something more modern, like a robotic chipmunk or a ‘swimming’ fish.

Catnip

Catnip is a great way to brighten up Fluffy’s day! (Don’t worry about overdoing it: Fluffy can’t overdose on ‘nip.)

Treats

Treats will also get that little motor going. Just stick with safe, suitable options. Canned tuna or chicken in water is fine. Fluffy may also enjoy sliced deli meat or cooked, boneless chicken or fish.

Playtime

Fluffy is absolutely adorable when she is running after that little red dot or pouncing on a catnip mouse. Take time to play with your furry pal! This will help her burn off any kitty angst she is feeling. She’ll be much calmer after a good workout. Playing also helps cats build self-confidence. (Plus, it’s just cute.)

Boxes

Kitties can be pretty opinionated, but they don’t necessarily have expensive tastes. Chances are, Fluffy will be quite happy with a plain paper bag or a cardboard box.

Window Seat

Fluffy is much safer inside, where she is safe from things like weather and traffic. She should definitely have a comfy spot where she can watch birds and squirrels.

Conversation

Cats all have their own unique purrsonalities. Some are just more talkative than others. However, even quiet furballs often enjoy being spoken to. Have a talk with your feline buddy. Even if she doesn’t answer, she’ll know that you’re paying attention to her, and trying to communicate. You never know: Fluffy may very well hop into your lap for a hug at the end of it!
