Fido's Beach Bag

July 15, 2021

Do you like taking your dog to the beach? We certainly are lucky to live around so many gorgeous beaches. Many of our canine patients love going to the shore! However, you’ll need to bring a few things along for your pup. You may want to make a special bag for him. Here, a Lakewood Ranch, FL vet lists as few things to put in Fido’s doggy bag.

 Water

If you were to only bring one thing along for your furry best friend, water should be it. Dogs get hot and thirsty very, very quickly running and playing at the shore. You may want to get your pooch his own doggy water bottle with an attached dispenser. Collapsible dishes are also great.

Waste Baggies

Don’t let Fido mar those powder sand beaches! Keep a stash of waste baggies in your bag, and pick up after your four-legged friend!

Paw Care Essentials

Going to the beach can be pretty rough on your furry friend’s toe beans. For one thing, Fido can get painful blisters and abrasions on his paws from running around on hot sand and tar. His feet will be extra delicate when they are wet, just like our skin is after we go swimming. Dogs can also cut their feet on sharp shells or rocks. Keep paw balm with you. Some dogs also wear booties: if your pup doesn’t mind them, get a pair for his beach bag.

First-Aid Kit

Man’s Best Friend is curious and playful, and he doesn’t necessarily know what’s good for him. Be prepared for anything! We recommend keeping a pet first-aid kit in your beach bag as well.

Towels

Fido doesn’t need a fancy beach towel. Old ones will do just fine. He should have a few different ones, though: one for laying on, and one for drying off.

Umbrella

Your canine buddy could get dangerously hot sitting in the sun. Bring an umbrella along for him. You can find doggie hammock beds with umbrellas attached.

Lifejacket

If you’re going to be spending time on a boat, or have a dog that may try to jump in the water and swim to Mexico, you may want to bring a doggy lifejacket along as well. Better safe than sorry!
