Animal Shelter Appreciation Week

November 1, 2021

It’s Animal Shelter Appreciation Week! While going to a shelter isn’t much fun for pets, it’s a much better alternative than being left homeless. Many of our patients were adopted from shelters, and are now living their best lives as beloved pets. A local Sarasota, FL vet discusses animal shelters in this article.

Reasons To Adopt Shelter Pets

You may have heard the catchphrase Adopt, Don’t Shop. This is a great mantra! While there are definitely some wonderful and responsible breeders out there, there are also many who, unfortunately, are more concerned with profits than the welfare of the pets they are breeding and selling. With pet overpopulation continuing to be a major problem, going through a shelter is one of the best things that you can do to help promote good animal welfare. There are benefits to you as well. You’ll be able to pick the perfect pet out of dozens—or hundreds—of adorable dogs or cats. You’ll also find that going through a shelter is much easier on the wallet than going through a bank.

Helping Shelters

Many shelters run on tight budgets, and rely very much on goodwill. There are several things you can do to help them. Donations of money and/or supplies are always wanted and needed. Just call the shelter or check their website to find out about what their current donation needs and restrictions are. If you make crafts, you may be able to make beds or toys. Volunteering is another option. Many shelters rely on volunteers to help care for their adorable furry wards. If you want to get even more involved, you might even consider fostering. It isn’t for everyone: many people just have too hard of a time saying goodbye to pets they’ve grown attached to. However, others find it very rewarding to see a pet going to their forever homes.

Spreading Awareness

One of the best things you can do to help both animal shelters and their furry wards is to spread the word about them. Even sharing posts on social media can help raise awareness. If you’re on social media, you can repost photos of adoptable pets. You may end up changing one pet’s world with a few clicks of your mouse.
