Tomorrow, February 2nd, is Brown Dog Day! It’s also Groundhog Day, but fortunately us Floridians don’t have to worry about how long winter is going to last. We love pups of all colors, and think Fido looks cute in long, short, and even curly fur. Read on as a Sarasota, FL vet puts brown dogs in the spotlight.
History
National Brown Dog Day is one of the newer pet holidays on our calendar: it was founded in 2021. As the name suggests, the point is to celebrate pups that are sporting brown coats. If your pooch is one of them, remember to treat Fido to something yummy. Brown foods, such as steak or treats, would not be inappropriate. Just don’t give your furry best friend any chocolate: it’s toxic to dogs!
Brown Dog Breeds
As you may know, color is often a consideration in official dog breed standards. According to the AKC, quite a few pups are allowed to wear brown. These include the Irish Dachshund, Chihuahua, Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Basenji, Australian Terrier, Basset Hound. Water Spaniel, Newfoundland, Labrador Retriever, Great Dane, English Mastiff, Pitbull, Leonberger, Cane Corso, Maltese, Pomeranian, and French Bulldog, to name just a few. Of course, there are also plenty of brown mutts out there!
Famous Brown Dogs
Quite a few of our canine companions have become doggy celebrities, and a decent portion of those famous pups are sporting brown or partly-brown coats. Fido has appeared in Homeward Bound, Dog, Show Dogs, Best In Show, Dog, and Turner and Hooch. (There’s also Cujo, which is a great reminder of the importance of keeping up with your pup’s rabies shots.) Many cartoon pups have also won our hearts. These include Benji; Lady, the animated star of Lady And The Tramp; and doggy detective Scooby Doo and his nephew, Scrappy. However, Fido’s greatest claim to fame may come from South Carolina. The state chose The Boykin Spaniel, one of the only breeds that is always brown, as its official mascot back in 1985.
Brown Cats
We know, this is Fido’s special day. However, it does seem worth mentioning that, while brown is a common color in many animals, it’s rare in cats. As for why that is, well, Fluffy isn’t telling. We’ll just assume it’s another kitty mystery!
